Breakfast Strata

What's Cookin'

Breakfast for dinner! It's always a good meal to me. We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not eat it more then once. That is my philosophy anyway. We all know that breakfast usually doesn't take that long to prepare, cook, or bake because we all have get on with our day. Absence minded, at 5:00 on Tuesday I started my Breakfast Strata and half way through realized the prep was two plus hours longer then anticipated. Serves me right for not reading the recipe before hand. We decided to have it for dinner tonight instead because, thankfully, the Strata can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours before going in the oven.

.

What is Strata?
It's a family layered casserole dish. Strata is similar to a quiche made of bread, cheese, and eggs. You can also put meat or vegetables into it. Good to know, right? Hopefully I wasn't the only one who was curious about a strata. Next question...what is healthy about Strata. Hmm...Our healthy cookbook reduced the calories, fat, and cholesterol which made it better then the traditional Strata.Other then that we need to focus on an ingredient in this casserole. Lets focus on eggs because there were a lot of them in this dish. (six to be exact)

Health tip on eggs:  one egg contains six grams of high quality protein and nine essential amino acids.

We all enjoyed the Strata. It had a mild flavor with really yummy french bread and of course filled with feta cheese. It was a little soggy in the middle which maybe could of been avoided if I refrigerated it for less time a baked longer. All in all for future reference I will chose an omelet or quiche over strata, but it was fun to try and learn new things.
